retsuko: (omgyay!)
These past two days, [livejournal.com profile] livyanne, another friend (E.), and I visited the Huntington Gardens and Library, attended Dar Williams' L.A. concert, and trekked around Disneyland!

And, lo, it was awesome. Awesome-possible!

First, there was the Huntington, site of many boring visits as a child, but highly palatable as an adult, and very beautiful. Plus, TEA! )

Then, the Dar concert! )

Finally, Disneyland! Where celebrity-spotting and general hilarity occurred! )

For anyone who's interested, the photos are here.

This trip made up for the root canal and all its related unpleasantness and did much good for my soul in general. :)
retsuko: (all ok!)
As usual, the easter egg party at M.'s house was a lot of fun, and as usual, my nerdish side took over, and this is what happened:

The black Mokona was tricky--how to get black from the egg dye? In the end, I settled for a protracted switching between dark blue and red, which rendered him darkish purple, which is as close to black I think we're going to get. The red dot on his head was obscured by the dye, too. But his eyes are wide open in the mekkyo! look. The white one was a lot easier to do and just required crayons. ^-^;;

I spent the last two days in Pasadena with the ultra-cool friend of my Mom's, C., who has known me since I was knee-high to a palm tree. Highlights of the trip included:

Poking Around in Neat-o Shops in Pasadena )

Making Friends with Cats & Dogs )

The Murakami Exhibit at MOCA in Little Tokyo )

tl;dr version: As weird as it was, I am glad I went and saw it. You've not been creeped out by cute until you've seen armies of smiling flowers in a painting about the size of a small swimming pool, so that each happy flower was about the size of your head. The old riot grrl adage about Hello Kitty's mouth being full of fangs and therefore, unshowable, is out in full force here. I wish Sanrio would let Murakami have free reign with Hello Kitty. What he would produce would be unspeakably weird, but completely wonderful.

Then I caught the train back, and now I am home again.
